A Day at Puffins
Children thrive when their day feels familiar and predictable. At Puffins, we provide a consistent, reassuring routine, familiar spaces and trusted adults so children feel secure, know what to expect and have the confidence to explore. Within this familiar rhythm, we remain flexible to children’s interests and individual needs.
We follow children’s interests and build on the ideas, questions and experiences they bring to their play. Seasonal celebrations, cultural events and unexpected discoveries inspire us too. Our team notices opportunities to extend learning in the moment, introducing new words, asking thoughtful questions and offering resources that help each child take their next step.

We talk about feelings, practise taking turns and encourage children to do things for themselves. Familiar routines and supported challenges help them build confidence and independence.

Our three indoor areas offer different opportunities for children to explore. In the kitchen and creative area, children make their own playdough, paint, investigate textures and enjoy sensory play. Cooking activities give them opportunities to mix, measure and notice changes, while practising new words and working together.

Our physical room changes with the children’s interests. Soft play, giant magnetic tiles, yoga and movement games support balance, coordination and strength. Sensory activities offer new things to investigate, and our much-loved Puffin discos bring music, movement and lots of smiles.

In the main room, our home corner, dolls and dressing-up resources inspire imaginative play and conversations about everyday life. Children can care for a baby, prepare a pretend meal or act out a story with friends. Our cosy book corner offers space to share favourite stories or enjoy a quiet moment. Small-world toys and construction materials encourage children to build, plan and solve problems together. At the craft area, scissors, glue, drawing materials and different textures help children strengthen their hands, explore mark-making and express their own ideas.

Outdoor play gives children space to investigate, create and enjoy the changing seasons. Our ramp supports movement between indoors and outdoors, and children practise getting their coats and wellies ready. In the mud kitchen, they experiment with water, sand, mud, leaves, twigs and other materials, mixing, pouring and making discoveries. Raincoats, wellies and umbrellas help us enjoy wet-weather adventures too.
Our adventures continue around Great Dunmow. We visit places such as the library, park, tennis courts and duck pond, and enjoy visits to the fire station when invited. Connections with a local care home and participation in community events help children develop a sense of belonging, meet different people and learn about the place they call home.
At our allotment, children help grow fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers. Digging, planting and watching things grow encourage curiosity, patience and care for living things. A bug hotel, playhouse, mud kitchen and digging areas provide plenty of opportunities for play and exploration.
We provide healthy snacks, with milk and water available. Snack time encourages independence and conversation, and children can access drinking water throughout the day.
We share daily updates on Tapestry, giving parents and carers a window into our day through photographs and descriptions of the children’s play and learning. Looking at these together at home can help children recall their experiences, talk about their discoveries and share what matters to them. It also gives families ideas for extending learning through conversations, stories and everyday activities, strengthening the connection between home and pre-school.
